Dominican Republic Beaches Guide 2025: Beyond Bávaro to the Best Hidden Shores
A Coastline That Redefines Beautiful 🇩🇴
The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, but in terms of tourism infrastructure and natural beauty, it stands entirely on its own. Over 1,600 kilometres of coastline, encompassing some of the whitest sand and most vivid turquoise water in the entire Caribbean. Most visitors see Punta Cana — which is magnificent — but the country has beaches that would reduce even seasoned travellers to silence.
Bávaro Beach, Punta Cana
The most famous beach in the Dominican Republic and the centrepiece of the Punta Cana hotel zone. Bávaro stretches for kilometres along the eastern tip of the island, with a largely unbroken succession of all-inclusive resorts facing perfectly calm, impossibly turquoise water.
The beach here is everything it's promised to be: fine white coral sand, warm shallow water with barely a ripple, palm trees providing natural shade. It's not undiscovered or intimate — this is one of the busiest resort beaches in the Caribbean — but it delivers on its promise completely.
Best hotels on Bávaro: Hard Rock Punta Cana, Iberostar Grand, Bavaro Princess, Lopesan Costa Bávaro.
Playa Rincón, Samaná Peninsula
This is arguably the most beautiful beach in the Dominican Republic — and it's almost completely unknown outside the country. A 3km arc of completely pristine white sand in a remote bay on the Samaná Peninsula, accessible only by boat from Las Galeras or by a challenging 4WD track.
There are no hotels on the beach itself. Just a handful of fishing families who set up simple outdoor restaurants on the sand and serve extraordinarily fresh grilled fish, lobster, and shrimp. The water is stunning — clear, calm, a gradient of blues from pale aquamarine to deep navy.
Getting here requires planning, but it's an experience that will define your Dominican Republic holiday.
Las Terrenas, Samaná
A bohemian, European-flavoured beach town on the north coast of the Samaná Peninsula that has become something of a secret among those who've discovered it. The beaches here — Playa Las Terrenas, Playa Bonita — are genuinely beautiful, less developed than Punta Cana, and with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Excellent French restaurants, boutique hotels, and a sense that tourism here is still done on a human scale.
Playa Grande, Rio San Juan
One of the most spectacular beaches on the Dominican Republic's north coast — a dramatic, wide crescent backed by cliffs and jungle that looks like it belongs in a David Attenborough documentary. The waves here are more powerful than on the east coast, making it excellent for surfing and bodyboarding.
There's a golf course immediately behind the beach, which adds an incongruous but charming dimension to the landscape. The beach itself is largely undeveloped and far less visited than it deserves.
Playa Macao
About 20 minutes north of the Punta Cana hotel zone, Playa Macao is a public beach with none of the resort infrastructure — no all-inclusive wristbands, no sunbed attendants, no frozen cocktails. Just a raw, beautiful stretch of Atlantic-facing coast with genuine waves, a handful of local food stalls, and an atmosphere completely different from the resort zone.
It's where Dominican families come on weekends, and it's a genuinely refreshing contrast to the polished all-inclusive experience.
Practical Dominican Republic Beach Tips
East coast (Punta Cana, Bávaro) — calm, warm, ideal for families and non-swimmers. The Dominican Republic's east coast is protected from Atlantic swells.
North and northeast coast — more Atlantic-influenced, with bigger waves and more dramatic scenery. Better for surfing and those wanting something wilder.
Beach vendors — particularly in tourist areas, vendors selling cigars, artwork, and excursions are persistent but generally good-natured. A firm "no gracias" is sufficient.
Jellyfish season — the north coast experiences periodic jellyfish blooms, most commonly between April and July. Check locally before swimming.
