The Ultimate Caribbean Travel Checklist: Everything You Need Before You Fly in 2025
The Caribbean Travel Checklist: Don't Leave Home Without It π΄
The Caribbean is one of the world's great holiday destinations β turquoise water, white sand, warm sunshine, and a genuinely different pace of life. But getting there smoothly requires a bit of preparation. Miss something important, and you could find yourself standing in an airport queue without the right documents, or arriving at your resort without essential items.
Here's the ultimate checklist β everything you need to do, bring, and arrange before you fly to the Caribbean in 2025.
4β8 Weeks Before Travel
Documents & Admin
Check passport validity β your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return date. This is a requirement for entry to most Caribbean countries. If yours is close to expiring, renew it immediately β processing times can be several weeks.
Check visa requirements β UK, US, Canadian, and EU passport holders don't need a visa for most Caribbean destinations for stays up to 30 days. Notable exceptions: Cuba requires a tourist card, and some countries require e-visas or have specific entry requirements. Check the official government travel advice for your destination.
Buy travel insurance β comprehensive travel insurance is essential. Ensure it covers medical emergencies (including hospital evacuation), trip cancellation, lost luggage, and hurricane disruption if travelling during hurricane season (JuneβNovember). Keep a digital and printed copy of your policy.
Share your itinerary β leave a copy of your flight details, accommodation, and travel insurance with a trusted family member or friend at home.
Health Preparation
Check vaccination requirements β most Caribbean destinations don't require specific vaccinations, but your GP may recommend hepatitis A, typhoid, and ensuring routine vaccinations are up to date. Some destinations require yellow fever vaccination β check the requirements for your specific country.
Arrange anti-malarial medication β if required for your destination. Most major Caribbean tourist destinations are low-risk for malaria, but some areas may require precautions.
Stock up on prescriptions β ensure you have enough of any regular medication for your entire trip, plus a few days extra. Carry medications in their original packaging with a copy of your prescription.
Bookings to Arrange
Pre-book your airport transfer β this is the single most important pre-trip booking for a smooth Caribbean holiday. Arriving at a busy tropical airport without a plan is stressful. A pre-booked private transfer means a named, licensed driver is waiting for you in arrivals β no queuing, no negotiating, no uncertainty.
Book popular restaurants and excursions β if there's a specific restaurant, catamaran cruise, or excursion you know you want to do, book it before you travel. Popular experiences sell out, particularly in peak season (DecemberβApril).
Arrange airport parking or transport β book your airport parking, or arrange transport to your departure airport, well in advance.
1β2 Weeks Before Travel
Money
Order local currency β while US dollars are accepted in most Caribbean tourist areas, having a small amount of local currency is useful for markets, tips, and smaller establishments. Order from your bank or a currency exchange; airport exchange rates are poor.
Notify your bank β tell your bank and credit card providers that you're travelling abroad, so they don't block your card for unusual international activity.
Check card fees β understand what your bank charges for foreign transactions and ATM withdrawals. A travel-friendly card with no foreign transaction fees can save significant money.
Packing (The Essentials)
Travel documents folder β passports, flight tickets (printed and digital), travel insurance documents, driving licence (if you plan to rent a car), and a printed copy of your accommodation address.
Sun protection β SPF 50+ sunscreen (the Caribbean sun is intense), a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and reef-safe sunscreen if you plan to snorkel.
Insect repellent β a good DEET-based repellent is essential. Mosquitoes are present throughout the Caribbean, and some carry dengue fever.
Lightweight, breathable clothing β the Caribbean is hot and humid year-round. Pack light cotton or linen clothing. A light waterproof jacket is useful for tropical showers.
Swimwear β at least two sets, so one is always dry.
Comfortable walking shoes β for excursions, hikes, and exploring towns. Pack water shoes if your itinerary includes waterfalls, rocky beaches, or snorkelling from shore.
Reusable water bottle β stay hydrated. The heat surprises many first-time Caribbean visitors.
Waterproof phone case or dry bag β for beach days, boat trips, and waterfall climbs.
Basic first aid kit β paracetamol, antihistamines, plasters, stomach settlers (for adjusting to local food), and any personal medications.
The Day Before Travel
Check in online β most airlines open online check-in 24 hours before departure. This saves time at the airport and sometimes gives you better seat selection.
Charge devices β phone, tablet, e-reader, headphones. Download entertainment for the flight.
Pack hand luggage thoughtfully β include a change of clothes, swimwear, and essential toiletries in case your checked bag is delayed. Carry any valuable items (electronics, jewellery) in your hand luggage.
Check flight status β before leaving for the airport, confirm your flight is on time. Register for flight notifications from your airline.
Screenshot or print your transfer booking β have your pre-booked transfer confirmation easily accessible. Your driver will need to confirm your name and booking reference.
On the Day of Travel
Arrive at the airport early β international flights recommend arriving 3 hours before departure. Caribbean flights from the UK are typically long-haul (8β10 hours), and the check-in and security process takes time.
Stay hydrated on the flight β drink plenty of water. The air-conditioned cabin dehydrates you, and you'll be landing in a tropical climate.
Dress for the heat β wear light, breathable clothing for travel. Even the journey from the plane to the terminal in the Caribbean can be hot and humid.
On Arrival in the Caribbean
Clear immigration and customs β have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation address ready. Most Caribbean immigration forms require your destination address.
Look for your driver β if you've pre-booked a private transfer, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name. Walk past the unofficial drivers who approach you β they may be friendly, but licensed, pre-booked transport is always the safer choice.
Get local cash β if you haven't already, use an ATM at the airport for a small amount of local currency for tips.
Check in and relax β you've arrived. Take a breath, change into your swimwear, and begin enjoying the holiday you've planned so well.
