Barbados Travel Guide 2025: Beaches, Food & Getting Around

Barbados: The Gem of the Caribbean 🇧🇧

Barbados is often called the "gem of the Caribbean," and it's a title the island wears with quiet confidence. Unlike some of its neighbours, Barbados feels immediately polished and welcoming — the roads are good, the people are wonderfully warm, and the standard of hotels, food, and service is genuinely world-class. Yet beneath the luxury, there's an authentic island culture that runs deep.

Whether you're travelling as a couple looking for a romantic escape, a family in search of sun and adventure, or solo and craving culture and coastline — Barbados delivers every single time.

Getting to Barbados

Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) is located on the south-eastern tip of the island, approximately 13km from the capital, Bridgetown. It's a modern, well-connected airport with direct flights operating from London Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester, with typical flight times of 8–9 hours.

Transfer Times from BGI

| Destination | Approx. Transfer Time | |---|---| | Bridgetown / City Hotels | 20–25 min | | South Coast (St Lawrence Gap, Hastings) | 15–20 min | | West Coast (Holetown, Sandy Lane) | 30–45 min | | North Coast (Speightstown) | 45–55 min |

Where to Stay in Barbados

The West Coast — The Platinum Coast — Sandy Lane, Colony Club, The Sandpiper. The sea on the west coast is calm, warm, and crystal clear. Sunsets here are legendary.

The South Coast — better value with a more lively, social atmosphere. St Lawrence Gap — "The Gap" — is the centre of Barbados's nightlife.

The East Coast — wild and rugged with powerful surf. Bathsheba is a photographer's paradise.

The Best Beaches in Barbados

Crane Beach — consistently voted one of the world's great beaches. A dramatic cliffside setting and translucent turquoise water.

Bottom Bay — hidden, secluded, and breathtaking. Arrive early and bring a picnic.

Accra Beach — the most accessible and lively beach on the south coast with beach bars and watersports.

Bajan Food & Drink

Flying Fish & Cou-Cou — Barbados's national dish.

Macaroni Pie — Bajan-style baked mac and cheese with a golden crust.

Rum Punch — the real deal, made with Mount Gay rum.

Fresh Fish at Oistins Fish Fry — every Friday and Saturday evening, one of the Caribbean's great street food markets.
